4/1/24 - 4/5/24

Field Trip:  Thank you to all the parents who offered to volunteer for the Naper Settlement field trip.  I wish I could bring you all!  If you didn't hear from me, your name was not randomly selected.  Sorry.

Reading:  Module 3 is called "Natural Disasters."  Our vocabulary, reading, and response writing will focus on nonfiction texts.  Additionally, we will wrap up work on a narrative writing unit.  This unit will focus on the essential elements of a fiction story as well as the steps in the writing process.  As always, I will mix in a few grammar lessons as well.

Math: Unit 4 is entitled Multiplying and Dividing Whole Numbers and Decimals, and Module 1 will be all about multiplication and division strategies.  Please remember the 5th grade homework policy states that during the 3rd Trimester, graded homework assignments that are one day late will automatically be reduced by 25% in the grade book and more than one day late will be reduced by 50%.  This mirrors the policy that will be used when the students get to Lakeview.

Science:  We will spend our science time catching up on some of our social studies lessons, but when we get there our next science unit is called Watery Planet.

Social Studies:  Students will work collaboratively in groups to take what they have learned in class about the English colonies in the new world and develop their own colony.  Information on this project can be found in Google Classroom.

3/18/24 - 3/22/24

Permission slips will go out on Monday for our upcoming field trip to Naper Settlement.  I am looking for a few parent volunteers to help supervise students on this trip on Monday, April 22nd.  You'll have to be here at Prairieview around 9am, you'll ride the bus with us, and we'll be back around 2pm.  If you are interested, please email me by 8am on 3/21.  If I have more interest than slots available, I will randomly draw names out of a hat.  You will be notified on March 21st if you have been selected.

Reading:  Module 3 is called "Natural Disasters."  Our vocabulary, reading, and response writing will focus on nonfiction texts.  Additionally, we will begin to work on a narrative writing unit.  This unit will focus on the essential elements of a fiction story as well as the steps in the writing process.  As always, I will mix in a few grammar lessons as well.

Math: We are pretty much done learning new material for Unit 3.  We'll need a couple of review days, and then we will have our Unit 3 test.  Remember, the pretest mirrors the final unit test, so studying the pretest is the best way for students to prepare.

Science:  We will spend our science time catching up on some of our social studies lessons, but when we get there our next science unit is called Watery Planet.

Social Studies:  Chapter 5, Lesson 4 will help us dig a little deeper into the 13 English colonies.  We will be using class time to develop concept maps to visually represent our understanding of each of the big topics covered in Lesson 4.

Math: We will wrap up Unit 3, Module 3 about place value patterns and metric conversions, and use Module 4 to help us work with the area model to show division.  I'm not sure if we can fit in the Unit 3 test before spring break, but it will be close!

Science:  We will spend our science time catching up on some of our social studies lessons, but when we get there our next science unit is called Watery Planet.

Social Studies:  Chapter 5, Lesson 2 will help us learn about the new European colonies set up by the French and the Dutch, and Lesson 3 will give us more detail on those first colonies in North America.  In the next few weeks, we will begin to use concept mapping to visually represent our understanding of these social studies topics.
